The College Dance Recruiting Playbook: Part 1
Think college dance recruiting starts senior year? Think again. Learn why September 1 matters, how the Common Dance Team Recruiting Video fits into the process, and what coaches are really looking for.
As a former University of Kansas Dance Team coach, I've watched college dance recruiting evolve. Here's what has changed, what hasn't, and why preparation starts long before senior year.
Starting Dance the Right Way
Choosing your child's first dance program can feel overwhelming. Discover the key qualities every parent should look for to ensure their dancer builds confidence, develops strong fundamentals, and falls in love with dance.
Where Should Your Dancer Be Right Now?
If your dancer wants to dance in college, the question isn't just “Where do we want to end up?"
It's “What should we be doing right now?"
As a former Division I University dance team coach, I've watched hundreds of dancers go through the recruiting process. The ones who looked the most “ready" during recruiting weren't the ones who suddenly figured it out their senior year. They were the dancers who had been building toward that moment for years.
Let's break down what your dancer should be focusing on at each grade level.
When Should Dancers Start Preparing for Dance Team?
Many dancers don't begin preparing until their freshman or sophomore year of high school because that's when dance team suddenly feels "real."
Unfortunately, that's also when many realize they're trying to catch up.
By the time auditions arrive, coaches aren't just evaluating who can perform choreography. They're looking for dancers with strong technical foundations, athleticism, performance quality, confidence, consistency, and the ability to learn quickly under pressure.
