When Should Dancers Start Preparing for Dance Team?
A PARENT'S GUIDE
By Allie Hopper, Founder | D1Vision Dance Academy & Former University of Kansas Dance Team Coach
One of the most common questions I hear from parents is:
"When should my dancer start preparing for high school or college dance team?"
The answer surprises a lot of people. It’s earlier than you think.
That doesn't mean your seven-year-old needs to be worrying about college auditions. But it does mean the skills that make dancers successful on high school and collegiate teams aren't built overnight. They're developed over years of intentional training.
The Biggest Misconception
Many dancers don't begin preparing until their freshman or sophomore year of high school because that's when dance team suddenly feels "real."
Unfortunately, that's also when many realize they're trying to catch up.
By the time auditions arrive, coaches aren't just evaluating who can perform choreography. They're looking for dancers with strong technical foundations, athleticism, performance quality, confidence, consistency, and the ability to learn quickly under pressure.
Those qualities take time to develop.
Middle School: Build the Foundation
Middle school isn't about worrying about college. It's about becoming the strongest dancer you can be.
This is the time to focus on:
Strong technical training
Ballet fundamentals
Flexibility and strength
Turns and leaps
Performance quality
Confidence
Learning how to train consistently
The dancers who invest in these fundamentals often find themselves much more prepared when high school opportunities begin.
High School: Train with Purpose
High school is when preparation becomes more intentional.
This is the time to begin asking questions like:
What skills are college coaches looking for?
What should my audition videos include?
How do I stand out?
What schools fit my goals?
When should I begin connecting with coaches?
The dancers who are most successful usually aren't the ones who start preparing during senior year, they're the ones who have spent several years intentionally building toward their goals.
It's About More Than Dance Skills
One thing many people don't realize is that dance teams aren't only looking for talented dancers.
They're looking for teammates, leaders and athletes who can handle pressure, communicate well, stay coachable, and represent their program with character.
That's why preparation isn't just physical, it’s also personal.
Every Journey Looks Different
Not every dancer wants to dance in college, and that’s ok! The key is giving all dancers the training, confidence, and guidance they need to pursue whatever comes next for them.
Why We Created MAKE THE CUT
When I coached at the University of Kansas, I saw firsthand how many talented dancers simply didn't know what to expect during the audition process.
It wasn't because they lacked potential, it was because they lacked information.
That's one of the reasons we created MAKE THE CUT.
This isn't another recruiting combine. It's an educational experience designed to help dancers understand what coaches are looking for, how to prepare, and what steps they can take now to reach their goals, whether that's making their high school team, dancing in college, or simply growing as an athlete and performer.
Final Thoughts
Preparation doesn't begin the year of auditions, it begins the moment a dancer decides they want to keep growing. Every class, every correction and every challenge is an opportunity to learn and that’s how dancers build the foundation for what's next.
Whether your dancer's dream is high school dance team, college dance, or something beyond, intentional preparation today creates opportunities tomorrow.
