Starting Dance the Right Way

What Every Parent Should Look for in a Dance Program

By Allie Hopper, Founder | D1Vision Dance Academy & Former University of Kansas Dance Team Coach

Watching your child walk into their very first dance class is a milestone. Whether they're twirling around the living room or simply curious about trying something new, those first experiences can shape how they feel about movement, confidence, and learning for years to come.

With so many studios and programs to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. While every studio offers something different, there are a few things every parent should consider before enrolling their child.

1. Look Beyond the Recital

A recital is exciting, but it's only one day out of an entire season. The best dance programs focus on what happens during the other 99% of the year. Ask yourself:

  • Is my child learning age-appropriate technique?

  • Are they building confidence?

  • Are they being encouraged to try new things?

  • Do they leave class smiling and wanting to come back?

Dance should be about growth, not just performance.

2. Find Teachers Who Teach Children - Not Just Dance

Being an incredible dancer doesn't automatically make someone an incredible teacher.

Young dancers learn differently than teenagers and adults. Great instructors understand child development, know how to keep students engaged, and create an environment where children feel safe to make mistakes, ask questions, and celebrate progress.

The goal isn't perfection. It's helping children fall in love with learning.

3. Choose a Program That Builds Confidence

Dance is about so much more than steps. A quality program teaches children how to:

  • Listen and follow directions

  • Work with others

  • Build resilience

  • Develop discipline

  • Celebrate effort

  • Believe in themselves

The confidence children gain in the studio often carries into school, sports, and everyday life.

4. Make Sure the Environment Feels Positive

Children thrive when they feel welcomed.

Pay attention to how instructors interact with students. Are they encouraging? Do they celebrate progress? Do children seem excited to be there?

A positive culture helps students stay motivated and enjoy learning.

5. Look for Structured Progression

Even recreational dancers deserve quality instruction.

A well-designed program has a clear path that allows students to continue developing as they grow. Skills should build from one level to the next so children experience success while being appropriately challenged.

Parents shouldn't have to wonder what their child is learning or how they're progressing.

6. Flexibility Matters

Not every child wants to compete, and that's okay. A strong recreational program allows children to enjoy dance for the love of movement while also creating opportunities to explore more if their interests grow over time.

There shouldn't be pressure to choose a competitive path before a child is ready.

Why We Created the D1Vision Enrichment Academy

At D1Vision, we believe every child deserves an exceptional first dance experience.

Our Enrichment Academy was designed for dancers who want to build confidence, develop strong fundamentals, stay active, and have fun in a supportive environment. Every class is intentionally structured to help students grow at their own pace while discovering a love for dance that lasts far beyond the recital stage.

Whether your child dreams of dancing on a college team one day or simply wants a place to move, create, and build friendships, we're committed to helping them feel seen, encouraged, and successful every step of the way.

Because the goal isn't just to create better dancers, it's to help build confident kids.
